We are currently featuring books from The Years of Lyndon Johnson series by Robert Caro. The fourth volume of this acclaimed biography of one of the singular figures in US history--The Passage of Power--was published on May 1, 2012 and is now available on Amazon.

Fiction

(1) A Land Remembered, by Patrick Smith.  A true Florida classic.  In this best-selling novel, Patrick Smith tells the story of three generations of the MacIveys, a Florida family who battle the hardships of the frontier to rise from a dirt-poor Cracker life to the wealth and standing of real estate tycoons.

(2) Play It As It Lays: A Novel, by Joan Didion. A ruthless dissection of American life in the late 1960s, Play It as It Lays captures the mood of an entire generation, the ennui of contemporary society reflected in spare prose that blisters and haunts the reader.

(3) Star Island, by Carl Hiaasen.  The latest from a South Florida original. 
Non-Fiction

(1) The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration, by Isabel Wilkerson. One of The New York Times Book Review’s 10 Best Books of the Year for 2010.  Chronicles the decades-long migration of black citizens who fled the South for northern and western cities, in search of a better life.

(2) The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York, by Robert Caro.  Winner of both the Pulitzer and the Francis Parkman prizes.  Tells how the "Master Builder" shaped New York City's politics and urban structure. 

(3) The Swamp: The Everglades, Florida, and the Politics of Paradise, by Michael Grunwald. A history of Florida's Everglades, from the earliest explorers to recent restoration efforts.
